Very often, a car's battery doesn't simply die suddenly and without warning, as there are typically symptoms that a battery is failing long before it's actually drained. Knowing what to look for when it comes to a weakening battery can mean getting a new battery before the old one does give out, so that you're never stranded in the morning or while on the road. Note a few of those signs of a failing battery here, so you can then replace it when needed, or check to see if a recharge will restore it to full power.

Swollen battery case

Batteries are full of chemicals, and these chemicals can change and react over time, and especially when exposed to excessive heat or cold. Their reactions may cause the battery case to swell or change shape, and this is an indication that those chemicals may not give the battery proper power to start and operate the car. This swelling of the battery case can also lead to leaks along the walls of the case, so that those chemicals drip out. They can then corrode other parts of the car, while also allowing the battery to drain and then eventually die altogether.

Smell

If a battery is overcharged, or going through the chemical reactions mentioned above, it may vent some gasses. These gasses often smell like rotten eggs, or may just have a distinct chemical odour. If you notice anything like this coming from the area of the battery case, have the battery checked for its current charge, and remember that overcharging the battery can be as damaging and keeping it undercharged. A mechanic or even an auto supply store can usually adjust the battery charge so that it's within the normal range, and the battery won't vent those gasses.

Slowing electrical devices

Your vehicle's battery should be strong enough to easily manage all the electrical devices of the vehicle, and at the same time. If you have the headlights on and then tap the brakes, and notice the dashboard lights or the headlights themselves start to dim, or turn on the wipers and they slow down when you hit the brakes, this often means the vehicle's battery is underpowered. All of those devices drain the battery of its starting power, more so than the alternator can replace, so that your car may simply not start one day. Once you notice any of these slowing electrical devices, have the battery checked for a needed recharge or replacement.
